Consultations with a Cause

Six weeks ago, Hurricane Harvey ravaged the 4th largest city in America and the entirety of Southeast Texas. Anyone who has lived through such a disaster knows too well that there will be years worth of work to do and months worth of recovering to normalcy. So two weeks after the hurricane, we searched as an organization for how we could help. Robbie, our COO extraordinaire, came up with a plan. He realized that when something like Harvey, or any of the other disasters of late occur, we all want to help but we don't really know how. He guessed that the many people out there who follow us on social media, or interact with us in person, might also be in the same boat. And that was where our Consultations with a Cause campaign was born.

It provided us an opportunity to do what we love, by meeting more of you, while providing you the opportunity to contribute to a community in need. I am tremendously proud to report that our doctors saw almost 100 consults in the last two weeks of September as a part of this plan. That's almost 100 hours of your time learning about the things we love to do. You, the wonderful community that interacts with our practice, helped us raise $12,000 dollars for the Greater Houston Community Foundation through that very campaign.

The above photo is taken with Jedidiah Gant. Jedidiah provides special value to businesses like ours by taking the challenges out of charity. As before, we worked with Jedidiah and the Raleigh + Relief Campaign to make certain that the money you all donated will find a good home.

Thank you,

Jeremy Pyle

Andrea's Experience with Cellfina

Meet Andrea!  This 28-year old mother of two was active and healthy, but wasn't thrilled with the uneven skin texture on her thighs. Her shape had been improved by liposuction, but dimpling in the skin remained and she felt self conscious in shorts and bathing suits. After a friend had a Cellfina treatment, she sought out expert advice.

When did you first start thinking about seeking treatment for cellulite?

I'd tried creams and scrubs in the past but I never saw any significant improvement. I started hearing about Cellfina last year while I was pregnant (and of course wasn’t able to have the procedure.)

While I waited, I was able to research the treatment, clinical studies and results in more depth and starting seeing great before and after photos!

Seeing the results from a friend who'd had treatment only 2 weeks prior ultimately made the decision for me! And it was almost winter, which I learned was the best time to get Cellfina since your thighs get a little bruised.

After your consultation, how did you feel?

After being told I was a good candidate for Cellfina (phew!) I was really ready to go ahead and have it done right away!

I was a little nervous of the actual procedure but knew I was in very good hands. I had high hopes that this would help the appearance of my thighs and overall help my self-esteem considering I'd recently had my second child and was still actively trying to lose the baby weight.

Right before treatment, the surgeon circled all the dimples that bothered me the most - so he didn't miss any. This was tough because I didn't realize how many spots I had, but I was excited for all of those areas to be nice and smooth.

What surprised you about the process?

During the consultation, Dr. Wood prepared me for what to expect afterwards. I guess I didn't really absorb it all because I still wasn’t really mentally prepared for the amount of drainage and bruising I was going to have!

It looked much worse then it felt though. The draining was basically finished within 24 hours and the bruises were 95% gone within 10 days. This is not a procedure I personally would want to do in the summer if I had lots of outdoor plans.

What tips or tricks did you find helpful during recovery?

I am glad I was warned I would leak from the little incision areas! The nurse made sure I had maxi-pad type gauze over each area. It was numb for the first few hours afterwards but by the next day I was definitely tender. I learned very quickly to sit down slowly and gently for a few days!

How do your results make you feel?

I had liposuction 3 years ago on my hips and thighs and was very happy with the results. However, liposuction did nothing for my cellulite. I loved my new shape but still wanted a smoother appearance. I am beyond happy with the outcome I got from just one treatment with Cellfina.

When I go to the pool with my kids, I no longer spend time thinking about covering up my bottom half or quickly wrapping a towel around my waist! Summer went from being a season I dreaded to one I can (finally) fully enjoy.

This was a much more simple and easy procedure then liposuction was and I would highly recommend it to anyone who's ever been bothered by cellulite! :)

Mary's Forever Labs Story

Meet Mary!  This health-conscience 35-year old nurse eats extremely well, works out and wears sunscreen religiously, but wondered what else she could do to protect her health in the future. After researching stem cell harvesting and discovering Forever Labs, she now has access to these youthful and important cells forever.

Why did you decide to harvest your stem cells?

I have been fortunate enough at 35 years of age to say I am in good health. Being a medical practitioner, I am acutely aware of the aging process and how it affects the body over time. So, I try to do my part and live a health-conscious lifestyle so I can feel good for years to come!

Logically, if I’m trying so hard to preserve my health now, why wouldn’t I want to preserve my own healthy stem cells for the future? When Davis & Pyle introduced me to the Forever Labs’ cutting-edge science, development, and research it was not a question of if I was going to harvest my stem cells but, how quickly could I get on the schedule to have this procedure done!

What was the process like?

The sign-up process was a breeze. I simply answered a brief health questionnaire on the Forever Labs website, and paid for the procedure. Dr. Wood offered the give me a prescription to help me relax, and for the discomfort. But... I told him if he didn’t take anything for his stem cell harvesting procedure -  I wasn’t going to either (I’m competitive like that).

The day of the procedure I was a little nervous but, I couldn't help but think of the gift I was giving to my future self and family. Desha (Dr. Wood’s nurse) gave me a robe and informed me to lay down on my right side on the treatment table. Dr. Wood came in with the technician from Forever Labs, and he talked me through the entire procedure again which was reassuring.

The procedure started with him disinfecting the area, and promptly followed by a pinch from the local anesthesia going in. We needed a few minutes for the medication to kick in which afforded me the opportunity to take a quick photo-op with Dr. Wood.

The sensation of the actual treatment was of deep pressure as Dr. Wood was finding the proper placement that was followed by a shift in pressure in my glutes, which I can only describe as a cramp. In total, the procedure only took about 15 minutes to perform, and immediately after the cells were harvested they were swiftly shipped off for freezing and storage by the technician.

Post procedure Dr. Wood placed a dressing on my back and went over my aftercare instructions which were basic. No submerging in water, keep the area cover, take an anti-inflammatory for any discomfort, and come back for a re-check in a few days. That was it. I drove myself home and relaxed for the evening.

Do I need to take time off work?

I went back to work (9 hours/on my feet) the next day! Visually no one could tell that I had anything done. I had a small discreet dressing on my back that had a tiny amount of drainage for a day or two. Physically I was a little sore but then again, I only really noticed it when I accidentally bumped into something because I had forgotten that I had a procedure the day before.

That was it, quick and easy! I am excited to see how this cutting-edge field continues to unfold. As advancements in stem cell therapy continue, who knows, it may help me live a healthier, longer life. How can gifting youth to myself be a bad thing?

Aquisha's Mommy Makeover Story

Meet Aquisha!  This yoga-loving 27-year old mother of two was ready to see her hard work paying off so she sought out Dr. Glenn Davis for advice.  Here is her Mommy Makeover story.

When did you first start thinking about surgery?  I started to think about surgery after I had worked out diligently for TWO YEARS faithfully after having my second child. My breasts really lost all of their fullness and my chest looked like I grew raisins! At that point I really wanted a better looking and more youthful bosom.  I was happy with my weight but hated the shape of my waist and the loose skin and muscles I was left with after pregnancy.  I started researching plastic surgery and my best friend raved about her plastic surgeon's office; Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery in Raleigh.

After your consultation, how did you feel?  OMG! I was so excited after my appointment I wanted to get the surgery done that day! Dr. Davis was so confident and so informative about the procedure and I just knew that I had found the right surgeon. The experience at Davis & Pyle was amazing. I scheduled my breast lift, implants and full tummy tuck surgery with Jessica and started counting down the weeks!

What was the day of your surgery like?  It was the most laid back, cozy, and safe environment upon arriving. The nurses, the anesthesiologist, and the surgeon were all waiting for me! When I laid down on the operating table the bed was super warm like those massage beds, I was given instructions to breathe regularly and count backwards from 10…next thing I knew I woke up wrapped up under a blanket. It went by so fast I had to look down to make sure I had my Mommy Makeover actually done!

I went home that day with loads of support from Dr. Davis, Jessica and all of the staff. I knew once again I had made the right decision. So much that three friends of mine went to have their breast augmentation done by Dr. Davis! I love sharing my positive experience, because there are so many options out there for cosmetic surgery I wanted my friends to have the best like I did.

What tips or tricks did you find helpful during recovery?  The best tip I have is to follow the doctors orders to the T! He has written out a detailed easy to read instruction form of how to take care of yourself post-op. I recommend having all of your prescriptions in arms reach before you head to surgery so when you come home its right there.

Most importantly - ask for help when you need it! You have no idea how much you will save yourself by doing so! I would recommend having at least one helper around you 24/7 for at least the first 4-5 days so you can truly rest and soak up the healing process. I had three helpers during this time because I have two small children, and I allowed my helpers to do everything for me and them! It is okay to ask for help, I cannot stress that enough!

What is your favorite new item to wear/place to shop?   By far I love wearing bikinis and tops with NO BRA! Ladies, lets be honest, when we come home for the day the first item that comes off is the bra, even before the shirt! And the fact that I have beautiful perky boobs now means bras are optional and I usually OPT OUT of wearing one!

Sundresses, maxi dresses, and strapless gowns really give me so much more confidence because I never have to stress about finding the right bra to wear with it! Talk about freedom and happiness! The plastic surgery I received from Dr. Davis has really changed my life and improved my career tremendously.

Live Better, Longer. Introducing Forever Labs

You may have thought at one time or another, “If I could just turn back time” and now, in a medical breakthrough, it has become a reality to stop the clock and store your healthy stem cells.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Benjamin C. Wood of Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery in Raleigh, has been tapped to be one of the first plastic surgeons in the United States to be offering the Forever Labs Stem Cell Collection procedure.

“It is very gratifying to be able to help people of all ages be prepared for future advances in medical science, and I am honored to have been selected as one of the first in my profession to be trained on stem cell collection,” Wood said. This state-of-the-art approach is at the forefront of science and technology, and will now be made available to his patients and the community at large.

Forever Labs was borne under the premise that the best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago; the second best time is today. As a scientist, Mark Katakowski, Ph.D., age 41, spent years in various Michigan-based medical labs testing and using bone marrow stem cells to rejuvenate older animals by treatment of disease.

“Time and time again, I experienced the power of stem cells on the animals and I knew that I wanted to store my own stem cells for future use. It became evident that everyone can benefit from this procedure,” Katakowski said.

He shared his vision with Steven Clausnitzer, 39, an entrepreneurial colleague and friend, and the two jointly founded Forever Labs, Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Clausnitzer is CEO and Katakowski is president. Both preserved their stem cells before forming the company. “To know that I have access to my own youthful biology now is priceless. It’s pretty amazing because, in many ways, I am no longer aging,” Clausnitzer said.

Wood explained that the procedure is being performed Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery’s private outpatient facility, located off Lake Boone Trail, where he and his medical team perform plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries daily. He mentioned that the stem cell collection usually takes 15-30 minutes, uses local anesthetic and that the surgical technique includes aspiration of bone marrow from the pelvis at the lower back. Patients have reported a brief five- to 10-second pressure-like sensation. It is low-risk and they can immediately continue with their daily routines.

Dedicating his life to helping people feel more confident and beautiful, both physically and mentally, Wood sees this now as a natural fit for his medical practice since it has the ability to help patients be proactive – both to fight disease and for age rejuvenation in their future. Forever Labs mentioned that once the stem cells are collected by the physician, they are stored at an FDA-compliant Biorepository run by Fisher BioServices in Franklin, Massachusetts.

A Forever Labs informational event is set for Wednesday, April 26th, at 5:30pm at Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery. Katakowski will be giving a demonstration outlining the benefits of having access to your own, young-adult stem cells and will also share his personal experience. In addition, Dr. Wood, Dr. Glenn Davis and Dr. Jeremy Pyle will also explain the Forever Labs stem cell collection procedure. Anyone who attends the April 26th event and decides they would like the procedure will receive a complimentary year of stem cell storage.

How Well Do You Know Your Plastic Surgeon?

Perfectly natural
Perfectly natural

Choosing to have plastic surgery can be an exciting and even celebratory decision, but the next step of the process may be even more important. When selecting your plastic surgeon, it can be helpful to look for these three qualities.

1. Trusted and Experienced

Whether you’re planning on getting a breast augmentation, tummy tuck or other cosmetic procedure, take a little time to do some research before you make your final decision. Look for evidence that this particular plastic surgeon is trusted, reputable and experienced. Many practices will include before and after photo galleries to showcase the experience they have in performing various surgeries, and this can give you a better idea of the type of results you could expect as well.

2. Board Certification

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon really is a must. Although the majority of plastic surgeries are elective procedures, they are still surgical procedures that require professional care. Board certification helps to ensure that you’re working with a reputable, knowledgeable professional who understands that your safety, an optimum recovery, and excellent results are of the utmost importance.

3. Medical Organization Memberships

Many board-certified plastic surgeons are also members or fellows of various medical organizations or societies like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, to name a few. Participation in medical organizations such as these helps to show that a plastic surgeon is an active member of the medical community in his or her field of expertise.

No matter what procedure you’re considering, finding the right plastic surgeon can mean the difference between getting the natural-looking results you want and ending up dissatisfied with your experience. Invest the time to get to know your plastic surgeon before you proceed with your procedure.

Come Build with Davis & Pyle

Each year, the Triangle Business Journal honors men and women under the age of 40 for their noteworthy contributions to organizations and the community. This year, Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery is proud to announce that one of our own, team member Gretta Handley, has been named as one of the 40 Under 40 leaders. As in past years, the 40 Under 40 group is raising funds for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. And 40 is an auspicious number, as that’s how long Habitat for Humanity has been fostering community and providing safe, affordable shelter for people around the world.

Laying the Foundation

At Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery, we welcome the opportunity to pitch in and lend a helping hand to our local Habitat for Humanity chapter. Gretta has already spent a day building a house, and we look forward to doing it together as an office in July. We invite you to join us in building a home for a hard-working family in our community. With your help, we hope to raise $65,000 to build an entire house.

Get in on the Ground Floor

The goal is for each 40 Under 40 winner to raise a minimum of $1625. If we can meet this challenge, then Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will have enough funds to build a complete home. Because we’re both optimistic and ambitious, Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery together with Skin Raleigh wants to raise at least $2500, and there are a number of fun ways that you can help us reach our goal:

  • Stop in to Skin Raleigh or Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery by June 23 to purchase a raffle ticket. You could win a CoolSculpting® treatment, a BOTOX® gift card, gift cards for Skin Raleigh, a NeoCutis skin care basket and more!
  • Visit and enter Gretta Handley in the honor field. Please leave your name, as we’d like to recognize you and enter you into a separate gift drawing.
  • Use #BuildwDP across social media and show us your charity work. Our surgeons will donate $10 to Habitat Wake on your behalf. Be sure to tag Davis & Pyle so we can credit your donation. (One donation per person, not per household.)

On June 24, the Triangle Business Journal will hold its annual celebration at the Crabtree Marriott to honor this year’s 40 Under 40 leaders. This event also marks the fundraising finale, and the totals raised will be projected on the big screen, with special prizes awarded to the top two fundraisers. As we work together to build a new home, we look forward to your participation and are grateful for your support and encouragement.

Are Cosmetic Procedures Becoming More Commodified?

Long before social media connected us and we shared our personal images with the world, cosmetic procedures were primarily the domain of the rich and famous. Elizabeth Taylor may have had the occasional nip and tuck, but in her pre-Internet heyday, image enhancements were only apparent through the lens of a 35mm camera. Sparked by the selfie and encouraged by Groupon deals, both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures have grown considerably in popularity, especially among younger generations. Today, members of the millennial set are making treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetichousehold names.

No Shame in the Selfie Game

In the past, cosmetic procedures were fairly taboo. People had “work” done, but they kept that fact under wraps. But with celebrities like the Kardashians putting their enhanced assets front and center, everyday people are taking notice and following suit. The deluge of celebrity images has had an impact on viewers, and even those in their teens and 20s are choosing cosmetic procedures in order to look more like the airbrushed images they see.

Aesthetic Procedure Increase

Plastic surgeons have noted a significant uptick in young adults pursuing all types of cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearances. Noninvasive treatments like chemical peels, injectables and laser treatments are also appealing because they don’t require the downtime and costs associated with surgery and many men and women alike now make these a regular part of their beauty routine.

Looking Good as Its Own Reward

The increasing popularity of online networks and selfies lead many people to get cosmetic procedures so that they can feel always be assured that they look their best. However, even in the face of online pressure to maintain a certain look, the overwhelming majority of people who get plastic surgery report an improved self-image as their primary goal.

How to Pick the Best Breast Augmentation Surgeon

Picking the best breast augmentation surgeon is the single most important step in planning your new stage of life with breast implants. Since your surgeon determines your final results more so than any other factor, including breast implant size or type, it’s essential to know how to go about finding the perfect surgeon for you. One of my clients posted this video about her own process and the decisions that led her to our practice. She raised some great points that I think are important to think about for anyone considering cosmetic surgery.

Schedule Multiple Consultations

Most women are well aware that their first meeting with their breast augmentation surgeon won’t be in the OR, but rather, at their initial consultation. However, it’s highly recommended that you schedule multiple consultations with different surgeons so that you can compare and contrast.

What's Your Surgeon’s Personality Like?

During your consultation, your ideal surgeon should make you feel comfortable. Regardless of how impressive a plastic surgeon's qualifications may be, if they don't make you feel relaxed and open to having a conversation about your goals, you may need to simply say no. Having breast augmentation is a personal experience, so the right surgeon for you should be someone you can connect with and effectively communicate your ideal outcome.

Providing Outstanding Patient Care

Your surgeon isn’t the only person who creates your breast augmentation experience. The patient care coordinator, who typically operates the front desk, schedules appointments and helps to answer basic questions, is just as important. No one deserves to simply feel like a number at her doctor’s office. Instead, the entire staff should be friendly and enthusiastic, helping you feel comfortable and excited about your upcoming procedure.

By maintaining a focus on not only surgeon credentials, but also the overall experience of your breast augmentation journey, you can find the perfect practice that incorporates exactly the right balance of professionalism and personal connection to make for a comfortable and successful breast augmentation.

A Cellulite Treatment that Really Works

Cellulite has been a plague to beachgoers since the dawn of the two-piece bathing suit (which can be traced back to 4th century Roman gymnasts, btw). So many products have promised results along the way, but each of these failed. Most were obvious shams, as the root of the problem was never really addressed, while others did hold some promise only to fizzle out when results were evaluated. Today, Cellfina™ finally offers a winning solution for correcting cellulite at its source.

The History of Treating Cellulite

In the battle against cellulite, first there were creams and topical tools that, to anyone who really understood the problem causing cellulite, could only fail. Then came liposuction. First used in the late 70s, liposuction seemed like the perfect solution.

It would make sense that if you address the fat the way liposuction does, you would no doubt address the dimples between the fat, too. Attempts at treating cellulite with lipo, however, were disappointing and we quickly learned that cellulite sometimes gets worse and almost never gets better with liposuction. About 3 years ago, a treatment called Cellulaze™ got FDA approval for treatment of cellulite, but the results were poor and often temporary.

With the advent of Merz North America’s Cellfina™ treatment, however, we are seeing something that’s never been seen before. That is, a cellulite treatment that works, that lasts, and a treatment where 94 percent of women are happy with their results even 2 years later. Cellfina™ is the most exciting minimally invasive treatment for cellulite that we have ever seen.

What Makes Cellfina™ Different

Cellfina™ is the first treatment we believe in because it works at the root of the problem. Cellulite is caused not by fat, but by tethering bands of tissue that link the skin to the deeper structures. Cellfina™ works by cutting these bands in a very controlled manner directly beneath the skin with the use of a precise needle. There are no big incisions and downtime is minimal. Treatments are done while you are awake, take 30-45 minutes, and require only local anesthetic.

The FDA approval studies show results are consistent even 2 years after treatment and patient satisfaction of 94 percent is exceptional. Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery is excited to be the first plastic surgery office in the triangle and only the second in the state to offer this groundbreaking technology.

Like any treatment, the most important step in determining whether or not you are a good candidate is setting up a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who can discuss this and other options with you.

How to Choose the Best Breast Implants for Your Body Type

While getting larger breasts isn't always the reason women opt for breast augmentation, more often than not increasing their size is the motivation. Choosing the right implant size and type for your body doesn’t need to be difficult, and keeping a few things in mind as you’re considering breast implants can help make the decision a little easier.

Implants Are Measured in Volume

Unlike bra variations, breast implants are measured in volume rather than cup size. Cubic centimeters (cc’s) are the unit used when comparing implant sizes, and you’ll come across measurements like 300 cc’s and 450 cc’s instead of C-cup and D-cup. This can cause confusion, since you don’t necessarily have a reference volume to take into a consultation.

Bringing in pictures of how you’d like your breasts to look can help your surgeon tailor implant volume and shape to your individual physique. It's a good idea not to worry as much about the exact number of cc's and instead let your surgeon make the decision on implant size once he or she has a clear understanding of how you want to look.

Implants Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All

Just because a certain size of implant looks great on a friend or sits comfortably on a celebrity doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get the same results. Identical implant sizes can look very different on different bodies. You want an implant size that is complementary to your frame, and going too large simply because “that’s what so-and-so has” can lead to dramatic results you didn’t want.

Saline and Silicone Gel Implants

Today, size and shape aren’t the only options you have regarding breast implants. Some women still choose saline-filled implants, but silicone implant models have become much more popular. Knowing the pros and cons of both can help you make an informed and comfortable decision.

Whether you’re looking for a natural or pronounced look, finding the right size, shape and breast implant type shouldn’t be extremely difficult given the options available.

A Plastic Surgeon Gets CoolSculpting®

By Dr. Jeremy Pyle

The reason I’m writing this in a public forum has a lot to do with how my story started. Guys like me just don’t think of a doctor’s office as a place to get more comfortable. Doctor’s offices produce discomfort. But here’s the thing about men: we have the ability to simultaneously not care what we look like and care a lot. When I finally sat down in the chair to do CoolSculpting® it wasn’t a need. I wasn’t uncomfortable in my clothes, I wasn’t uncomfortable out of my clothes. But when my attention was brought, one way or another, to the fact that I had some fat around my abdomen that I wasn’t fond of, it bothered me. I have known for some time that I was a good candidate for CoolSculpting® so when a break in my schedule coincided with the room being available, I finally sat down to have the treatment.

The decision of when to do the treatment was a lot harder than deciding to do it. I knew I would benefit from it, and it’s not a terrible experience, but I knew that I had three areas (lower abdomen and each love handle) that would benefit. When we only had two machines, treating three areas meant doubling the time of one treatment, from just over an hour to almost 3. I don’t get a lot of 3 hour breaks so I just never got around to doing it. When we got our third and fourth machines in September that meant that the whole process would take only a little more than an hour. The decision was easy then and I got on the schedule.

I first met with Louise, our CoolSculpting® Expert Technician. We talked about what was needed, made a plan, took some before pictures and got to work. For Coolsculpting® that means I sat in a chair and worked. Louise got me a Diet Coke, hooked up the machines, and 3 minutes later I was on my laptop. I avoided the temptation to watch Netflix or TV and spent an hour on staff development plans. Louise returned in time to remove the machines one at a time. They don’t hurt going on, and they don’t hurt coming off, but there’s a bit of pain as the tissues rewarm. It’s temporary. Five minutes later, I felt normal. I had some mild bruising and swelling that night and for about 5 days afterwards. I’m about four weeks out now and the results are shaping up. I know that it will take about 12 weeks for the results to be final. I’m not certain whether I’ll do another treatment then - I’m going to wait to see how things settle out.

With the advent of technologies like CoolSculpting®, the view that men take towards personal betterment is changing. Young men care more, middle aged people care more, and those who look around the boardroom and feel like the old guy are being forced to re-evaluate their perspective on the things that used to seem obviously off limits. The medical world has responded to these pressures by improving how men improve themselves. Busy professionals can lead their life without taking a break but while getting more comfortable in their own skin. I love my profession and my job and I work 16 hours a day. If I can do it, anyone can. And here’s the thing: there’s about a zero percent chance that my life is made worse with Coolsculpting® and an 80+% chance that it is made better. And in evaluating the opportunity cost in those terms, it just made sense.

Could a Mammogram Pop Your Breast Implant?

Yearly mammograms are recommended for women over 40 as part of early detection for breast cancer. Certainly this guideline shouldn't be ignored by women who have had breast augmentation, but can the test itself affect the integrity of your implants?

How Mammograms Work

Mammograms are like an X-ray that looks only at breast tissue. However, because these lower-dose X-rays don't pass through tissue very easily, the machine is designed with two plates that slowly compress the breast in order to take a clearer image.

Effective Mammograms with Breast Implants

Recently, a woman claimed that her routine mammogram popped her breast implant, and is now suing the facility for damages. She feels the pressure exerted by the machine on her implants caused one to rupture. Although the fact that her implant deflated can't be argued against, experts agree that this is far from a likely or regular occurrence.

If you do have breast implants, be sure to let your imaging technician know ahead of time. And if possible, you may also want to visit a facility that frequently sees women with augmented breasts for the most accurate outcome. The possibility of a mammogram affecting your implant is exceedingly rare, so don't neglect your annual screenings out of fear of a fluke accident.

Embracing Progress in Plastic Surgery

By Dr. Jeremy Pyle In the last year we have added 7 new technologies and treatments at Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery. They include 3 products from Merz, a great partner and neighbor with their headquarters in Raleigh:

And we've also brought in 4 products from the rest of the cosmetic world:

  • Kybella™, the world's first injectable treatment for fat under the chin
  • A Clear + Brilliant laser to provide a better skin care regimen for our younger patients
  • Two new CoolSculpting® Applicators (CoolMini for the knees, bra-fat etc and the CoolSmooth for the outer thighs)
  • Our own line of skincare products, aptly named "Skin"

All this is in addition to the dramatic improvements provided by new implants by Allergan (Inspira), Sientra (107 Gummy Bear) and the Ideal Implant.

Evaluating New Tech

As a busy practice in a great city, we get bombarded with offers to add new technologies to our office. Almost every week, one company or another offers a product or machine to us to use. Most of these are passed upon. From time to time, we do decide that a technology has been proven sufficiently safe and effective and we offer it to our patients. It occurred to me the other day that some of our patients may find it interesting to know why we choose what we choose.

The choice to use a new technology starts with a conscious decision representing the core of who we are as a practice. We choose to embrace progress, to allow it to move us forward and to offer our patients the best of what the plastic surgery world has to offer. You wouldn't go to your wireless carrier and expect to get an original iPhone because the technology has advanced dramatically since then.

We believe that the same should be true in our office. If a new technology has been proven to be safe and effective, and provides a benefit that can't be obtained with other treatments, we want our patients to know that they can take advantage of progress and can trust us to choose the right things to offer. What you will not find in our office are new technologies that don't significantly improve upon the old ones; and you will absolutely not find technologies that don't work or carry excessive risks.

We have added the terrific treatments above because this is a time of unparalleled advancement in the field that we love. In each case, they provide benefit in a way or at a rate of success that has never before been possible. Our practice is built on three founding principles: that we will offer Excellence, Experience and Education. These pillars have allowed us to build a trusting relationship with our patients. When we add treatments, our patients know that they can be trusted. We thank you for that trust and that loyalty and look forward to a bright future together.

Why “Natural” Beauty is a Myth

She has an amazing career ahead of her
She has an amazing career ahead of her

To the outside observer, celebrities might seem ageless: blessed with the genetics and the good fortune of maintaining their natural youthfulness over time. Don’t be fooled, though—when it comes to the majority of “natural” celebrity beauty practices, there’s often very little that’s natural.

False Standards

While the effort that celebrities put into their public image remains their own personal business, these icons who act as role models have an inordinate amount of influence over their fans' behavior. People who already struggle with confidence issues may go to great lengths to achieve the same standards of beauty that seem to come so easily to their on-screen idols.

This creates a difficult situation, as many celebrities with preternaturally gorgeous appearances have had some type of cosmetic work done. This may be as minor as a little BOTOX®, but the end result still creates a look that may be impossible for others to replicate without turning to a plastic surgeon.

The Backlash of Cosmetic Surgery Stigma

Due to the social stigma surrounding cosmetic surgery, few celebrities own up to having had work done. Yet, ironically, the same society demands that celebrities maintain an impossibly perfect standard of attractiveness, which is exactly what leads to the need for plastic surgery in the first place.

While much of the beauty of celebrities may be artificial, there’s nothing inherently wrong with getting cosmetic surgery. And it's a testament to surgical skill that so many members of the general public have no idea that their favorite celebs have undergone any type of cosmetic enhancement. The best plastic surgery results should look natural and genuine. And, while the final outcome may have been achieved with some outside help, the inner boost to self-confidence is as natural as it gets.

Is the Latest Breast Implant Type Better?

The FDA recently approved NATRELLE® INSPIRA™ round, gel-filled, textured breast implants for use in breast augmentation in the U.S. The implants, available in Canada since 2011, are fuller than previous models of round implants currently in use. The new INSPIRA™ implants are designed for women who want to have more upper breast fullness. Round implants like the new INSPIRA™ model are the same shape in all directions, allowing gravity to pull the implant into a natural breast slope after placement while ensuring fullness through the upper chest (called the upper pole). Round implants can offer results ranging from very natural looking to more dramatic, depending on a number of factors. Most breast augmentation surgeries are performed using round implants.

An Improvement for Textured Implants

One question to ask your surgeon before breast augmentation is whether to choose smooth or textured implants. Smooth implants move about freely in the capsule that forms around them, while textured implants bind with breast tissue as if Velcroed into the breast pocket.

The new INSPIRA™ round gel-filled textured implants are designed to ensure a more secure implantation than previous textured implants on the market along with a more cohesive gel that lowers the potential for rippling.

For women undergoing breast reconstruction, augmentation or revision surgery, NATRELLE® INSPIRA™ round, textured implants are available in a variety of sizes, projections and widths. This range of options combined with the implants' enhanced fullness offer women highly customized, precise results when administered by a board certified plastic surgeon.

Hollywood, Plastic Surgery and Looking Too Fake

I don’t think anyone has ever looked to Hollywood as an example of realism when it comes to physical appearance, but lately there’s been some backlash in Tinsel Town against film stars taking surgical steps to enhance their appearance. Is this a sign that Hollywood has finally had it with plastic surgery?

A New Emphasis on Looking Natural

For popular period shows, especially those that frequently show nudity (like Game of Thrones), casting agents have started insisting on only using non-augmented actresses to ensure a more authentic look. Due to the widespread popularity of cosmetic surgery within the U.S. movie industry, this means casting calls are going out in places like Australia and Great Britain in an effort to find women with natural breasts and less BOTOX®.

Does this mean aspiring actresses should avoid getting breast implants or visiting med spas? Not necessarily. Although the stigma surrounding plastic surgery is lessening, the stigma against looking as if you’ve had work done remains in full force. With that in mind, simply think carefully before choosing your cosmetic surgeon.

As a plastic surgeon myself, I can safely say that the problem with Hollywood’s plastic surgery crisis isn’t that celebrities are going under the knife, but rather that so many starlets end up with results that look noticeably fake. An obviously altered appearance should never be the goal of any cosmetic procedure. When a breast augmentation or other cosmetic enhancement is performed well, the results should look so natural that they stand up to scrutiny even when viewed in HD.

Just What Makes the IDEAL® Implant So Ideal?

One of the biggest questions every breast augmentation patient asks herself is whether to opt for saline or silicone implants. Either implant option can create beautiful results in the right candidate, and a quick look into saline or silicone will find staunch fans backing the advantages of either one. But what if you could have the best of both worlds?

A Saline-Silicone Hybrid

The idea of combining the best aspects of both saline and silicone implants is what provided the inspiration for the new IDEAL® implant. The IDEAL® implant is frequently referred to as a hybrid implant. Although it has the appearance of a standard saline implant on the outside, the IDEAL® implant contains a series of silicone implant shells nested together with saline solution filling each space between.

Curved Edges for a Better Fit

The IDEAL® implant is also designed with curved edges. Curved edges can contour better to the chest wall, providing a more natural fit than standard round saline implants by simulating the way natural breast tissue is shaped.

The IDEAL® Advantage

The IDEAL® implant offers another option for women interested in achieving  the best breast augmentation results. The greatest advantage of the IDEAL® implant comes from the nested shell design, which helps minimize bouncing while also reducing the chance of wrinkling.

In short, the IDEAL® implant addresses the three main concerns associated with saline: visible implant ripples, a too-round breast shape after augmentation, and a texture that doesn’t feel quite the same as natural breast tissue. For women who are committed to achieving a natural result with saline-filled implants, the IDEAL® implant can certainly live up to its name.

You may have heard about a new breast implant type recently approved by the FDA called the IDEAL IMPLANT®. This latest implant option gives women another choice and one more thing to consider when choosing breast augmentation. We are one of only two practices in Raleigh who will initially have access to this advanced implant type starting in July. The IDEAL IMPLANT is a saline-filled implant, but with a new design. It contains a series of nested shells inside that help to control the movement of saline within the implant. This helps to minimize the rippling and wrinkling that can be associated with other saline implant designs and creates a more natural breast appearance following breast augmentation surgery. In fact, many people think the implant looks and feels very much like a silicone or "gummy bear" implant. This makes the IDEAL IMPLANT an "ideal" option for women who want a more natural look and feel but do not want to choose a silicone gel implant. Research study findings show that this new implant type has a high rate of patient satisfaction along with a lower rate of capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue around the implant) compared to single-shell saline implants.

"The biggest objection to saline implants is that they don't look and feel as natural as silicone models," notes Dr. Glenn M. Davis. "The IDEAL IMPLANT goes a long way toward addressing those concerns while giving women who do not want silicone implants another option. In our experience, the feel is very natural and the implant behaves very much like real breast tissue. We're excited to be selected as one of the few plastic surgery practices across the country to initially offer this implant type."

Like other saline implants, the IDEAL IMPLANT is inserted before it is filled, meaning that the incisions necessary during the breast augmentation procedure can be smaller compared to surgery using silicone breast implants, which must be inserted pre-filled. Like other implant types, the IDEAL IMPLANT can be placed sub-muscularly or sub-glandularly with standard surgical techniques.

Liposuction 101

Liposuction is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure. Why? For starters, it works. Also, there are very few small incisions, making it hard to know if you've had lipo. With newer treatments such as CoolSculpting, SmartLipo and Laser Lipo getting the spotlight in recent years, standard liposuction doesn't get as much attention but in our experience it's still one of the most effective body contouring options. Liposuction works by permanently removing fat cells from areas where you would rather they not be. Removing these fat cells can be used to decrease the overall volume of an area or it can be used to shape areas. Oftentimes, we start a procedure with both of these as our goals.

The Nature of Fat Cells

Let’s talk more about those fat cells. When you are about 18 years old, you will have made all of the fat cells you are ever going to make. We don’t make new fat cells as we age, we just make the ones we have get bigger or smaller as our weight changes.

Each person has a genetic code determined by their parents that tells their body to store more, or more stubborn fat in certain places. These tend to be the problem areas that drive people in to see us and to get help. Liposuction sucks out those fat cells and they do not regrow. Some fat cells are always left behind, however, and if a person gains weight after liposuction, the fat will get stored somewhere. That’s why we urge people who have liposuction to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Lipo Procedure

We perform almost all liposuction procedures here in our surgery center. The procedure begins by making small incisions and using them to fill the tissues we intend to treat with a special mixture of fluid called tumescent. Tumescent has a mixture of IV fluid, numbing medicine (lidocaine) and Epinephrine. This causes fat cells to swell and blood vessels to shrink. As a result, very little blood is lost in the stuff that gets sucked out. This is a picture of what that looks like at the start.

The tumescent fluid is given a little bit of time to work and then the action of sucking out the fluid and fat begins through the same small holes made previously. This is usually done from a couple of different directions and points and follows a map made preoperatively by the surgeon with the patient standing. The picture below shows the left side treated but the right side not treated. You can see the dramatic results that can happen with liposuction in this setting. The color of the skin is changed because of the effect of the epinephrine in that tumescent fluid.

When the entire area we intend to treat is completed, the areas that were suctioned out are smoothed internally with a special tool called a basket cannula. Loose sutures are often put into the incisions to help them heal quickly and postoperative garments, in this case a girdle, are put on before the person wakes up. The picture below shows both sides treated before the girdle is placed.

The most that can be removed at one time as an outpatient (where the patient gets to go home afterwards) is in the vicinity of 5 liters. It is certainly possible to remove more than that but I prefer to do that in the hospital and ask the patient to spend one night if we do. That’s rarely needed, though, as 5 liters is a lot and can, by itself, provide dramatic results.
