Live Better, Longer. Introducing Forever Labs

couples-makeover-300x169.jpg

You may have thought at one time or another, “If I could just turn back time” and now, in a medical breakthrough, it has become a reality to stop the clock and store your healthy stem cells.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Benjamin C. Wood of Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery in Raleigh, has been tapped to be one of the first plastic surgeons in the United States to be offering the Forever Labs Stem Cell Collection procedure.

“It is very gratifying to be able to help people of all ages be prepared for future advances in medical science, and I am honored to have been selected as one of the first in my profession to be trained on stem cell collection,” Wood said. This state-of-the-art approach is at the forefront of science and technology, and will now be made available to his patients and the community at large.

Forever Labs was borne under the premise that the best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago; the second best time is today. As a scientist, Mark Katakowski, Ph.D., age 41, spent years in various Michigan-based medical labs testing and using bone marrow stem cells to rejuvenate older animals by treatment of disease.

“Time and time again, I experienced the power of stem cells on the animals and I knew that I wanted to store my own stem cells for future use. It became evident that everyone can benefit from this procedure,” Katakowski said.

He shared his vision with Steven Clausnitzer, 39, an entrepreneurial colleague and friend, and the two jointly founded Forever Labs, Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Clausnitzer is CEO and Katakowski is president. Both preserved their stem cells before forming the company. “To know that I have access to my own youthful biology now is priceless. It’s pretty amazing because, in many ways, I am no longer aging,” Clausnitzer said.

Wood explained that the procedure is being performed Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery’s private outpatient facility, located off Lake Boone Trail, where he and his medical team perform plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries daily. He mentioned that the stem cell collection usually takes 15-30 minutes, uses local anesthetic and that the surgical technique includes aspiration of bone marrow from the pelvis at the lower back. Patients have reported a brief five- to 10-second pressure-like sensation. It is low-risk and they can immediately continue with their daily routines.

Dedicating his life to helping people feel more confident and beautiful, both physically and mentally, Wood sees this now as a natural fit for his medical practice since it has the ability to help patients be proactive – both to fight disease and for age rejuvenation in their future. Forever Labs mentioned that once the stem cells are collected by the physician, they are stored at an FDA-compliant Biorepository run by Fisher BioServices in Franklin, Massachusetts.

A Forever Labs informational event is set for Wednesday, April 26th, at 5:30pm at Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery. Katakowski will be giving a demonstration outlining the benefits of having access to your own, young-adult stem cells and will also share his personal experience. In addition, Dr. Wood, Dr. Glenn Davis and Dr. Jeremy Pyle will also explain the Forever Labs stem cell collection procedure. Anyone who attends the April 26th event and decides they would like the procedure will receive a complimentary year of stem cell storage.

What can I expect? How can I compare my implant sizes? How will I ultimately look with breast implants?  These are some of the most common questions from patients considering breast augmentation. Fortunately, with state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Davis, Dr. Pyle, and Dr. Wood can bring you closer to an answer.

This intimate small group discussion with our surgeons is exclusively for upcoming breast consultation patients. You have the opportunity to preview our 3D Vectra technology and take home a picture of your new ‘shape.’ At 6 pm Dr. Davis, Dr. Pyle, and Dr. Wood will begin their education on your breast augmentation options, with questions & answers to follow. This event is by invite-only, is free and there is very limited seating. We look forward to providing you with food, drinks, expert information, special pricing, door prizes and an amazing way to view your new figure!

Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery is the first practice in the region to acquire the latest VECTRA 3D simulation technology. This system captures a three-dimensional image of you by taking several photographs simultaneously from multiple points of view. The photographs are then used to create a 3D virtual model capturing your unique body anatomy and proportions. We can then ‘try on’ implants in your body so you can decide the size, profile and shape.

Find out more at www.sculptmydream.com or view our YouTube video on the Vectra technology.  We look forward to seeing you. If you would like to reserve a seat or have questions, please call or email our office at 919.785.1220 or info@drgmdavis.com

If you only want ONE product, this is it.

SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum is featured in Good Housekeeping with a great review. It is included in a feature story wherein six women tested products and treatments for their specific wrinkle/aging concern. TNS Essential Serum was used by one of the women for 12 weeks to help improve significant wrinkles and crow’s feet.  The test revealed a 160% decrease in wrinkles and 70% decrease in roughness! Overall, the user and expert were both pleased with the results, noting the improvement in skin texture and wrinkles. There is a reason that SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum is Davis Plastic Surgery's staff favorite product for GLOWING skin!

A patient recently emailed us this testimonial about TNS.

"After about 7 nights of use, I really began to notice a major difference in my skin. The lines on my face have been plumped and smoothed, and the overall texture is more refined and clear. I was recently Facebook tagged in a random-night-out candid photo. This would normally be horrifying event for me, but instead I look positively radiant (and that isn’t even a euphemism). But the verging-on-Benjamin-Button-type drama is reserved for my neck and décolleté.

Here I have noticed quite miraculous effects. I am a side-sleeper, which usually means that I wake up in the morning with a neck resembling a crumpled piece of paper. However, I have been waking up of late ready for my close-up, as it were. I have also noticed a marked improvement in the tone of my skin: age spots have faded and general redness and discoloration have been reduced." -Gail

Questions & Answers from Dr. Glenn Davis

The most commonly performed procedure Dr. Davis performs is breast augmentation.  We asked Dr. Davis to answer the most commonly asked questions about implant options, recovery and augmentation in general.

What are the differences between saline and silicone implants?

There are differences between the saline and gel but one is not better than the other - the question is which is better for you.  There is no difference in the appearance.  Your breast should look natural with either implant.  The major difference is the detection of a leak in the implant.  It is obvious in a saline implant that a leak has occurred as the volume of your breast will deflate over several days.  Your body will readily absorb the saline solution.  The gel implant on the other hand is not absorbed by the body and there is no change in their look and feel if they should leak.  All gel implants are ‘cohesive gel’ or ‘gummy bear’ implants.  There is no known disease caused by silicone gel in the body.

In consultation with your plastic surgeon, you will discuss at length such topics as size, approach and incision, as well as all pros and cons of breast implant surgery.

How long does this surgery typically take?

The time from beginning to end of surgery is usually about an hour.

What is the recovery period?

There is some discomfort for three to five days.  You should be able to resume your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable and most people take a week off work. It is not uncommon for someone to have surgery on Thursday and be back to work on Monday.

Where will the incision be and how big is it?

We offer three choices:

1.  the fold beneath the breast

2.  the lower curve of the nipple/areola

3.  the top of the arm pit

There are pros and cons to each and there is no difference in healing, costs, recovery, or complications.  The length of the incision will depend on your choice of saline (one inch) or gel (two inches).

Can I breast feed after breast augmentation?

If you have breast fed successfully, you should be able to breast feed afterwards.  There is no mechanical reason to prevent breast feeding with any of the techniques or incisions offered.

How often will I have to replace the implants?

The manufacturers have a life time replacement for the implants should they fail.  There is no cost for the implants but an operation to remove the leaking implant and place the new one will involve some costs.  They should last at least ten years and hopefully many years beyond this.  Replacement is needed only when they leak if that should occur.

How do I know if I need a lift or implants?

In consultation with your plastic surgeon, you will discuss your expectations and desires. A breast lift is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape the sagging breast, determined by the skin.  If a larger volume or cup size is desired the implant will augment your existing breast tissue and fat.  An implant will not change shape and a lift will not change size.  Sometimes both a lift and implants are done at the same time to increase firmness and size.

Where is the surgery done?

Almost all our patients choose to have their procedures in our AAAASF accredited office surgery facility. We also offer outpatient surgery at any hospital in Raleigh or Cary.

What type of anesthesia is used?

We recommend a general anesthesia with a carefully selected anesthesia provider.

How can I determine what size I would like to be?

There is no reliable measurement of breast size.  You need to not focus upon bra sizes because they will vary from manufacturer to style to personal comfort for fit.  The cup size of a 36 C is very different from the cup size of a 34 C although they are both “C

The Best (& Worst!) Cities for Skin

Your Best (and worst!) Cities for your skin
Your Best (and worst!) Cities for your skin

You can see it lurking in a hazy layer over large cities. Its foul stench follows you through the streets. Sometimes you can even taste it. The culprit is smog. If the thought of breathing in a lungful of smog makes you choke because of the damage it can do to your respiratory system, you won't be surprised to know that smog can also damage your skin. Charlotte is one of the worst cities for the skin on our list because of its high ozone and pollution levels, with 26.2 high-ozone days out of the year. The American Lung Association also ranked Charlotte as the tenth worst city for ozone pollution in the US in 2010. Why is it so polluted? It may have something to do with the lack of air flow in the city on the hottest days of the year, which can be related to its geographic location: in the middle between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Coal-powered plants might also play a factor, as well as population growth.

Smog is a chemical cocktail of low-level ozone (molecules of three oxygen atoms bound together), particulates (such as dust, soot and smoke), and other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and lead. When pollutants in the atmosphere are absorbed through your skin, your whole body can suffer the consequences.

You hear a lot about the ozone layer these days, and for good reason. The ozone layer in the stratosphere, or upper atmosphere, protects you by blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but ozone in the troposphere, or ground level, is a major component in smog.  When the sun's rays hit the smog, it breaks down into free radicals. If they enter the body, the free radicals bounce all over the place within the cells and chip away the cells' walls. Several diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, have been linked to free radical damage.

In addition to being a factor in serious diseases, free radical damage can also cause premature aging. When the pollutants in smog rob your skin of its oxygen supply, the result is signs of aging, such as wrinkles and loss of elasticity in the skin. If you already have mature skin, you will be more susceptible to high pollution concentrations because your ability to fight free radicals diminishes as you get older.

Fortunately, if you live in Charlotte - or any area with a significant amount of pollution, you don't have to pack your bags!  (We <3 Charlotte!)  There are measures you can take to protect your skin from pollution.

  • Antioxidant nutrients help to block free-radical activity in the body, so include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet.
  • Many skincare products contain antioxidant ingredients, such as vitamins A, C, and E-  Obagi has a popular Vitamin C serum line which neutralizes free radicals to prevent skin cell damage.  Skinceuticals also have an entire skincare line devoted to Prevention.
  • Cleanse your skin thoroughly at night to wash off collected dirt and grime.
  • Water: Stay hydrated to flush toxins through your system and keep your skin (and entire body) healthy.
  • Sunscreen!: The diminishing ozone layer results in increased UV exposure, more sunburns, and higher rates of melanoma. UV exposure increases free radical activity. Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun and ozone.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that resurfaces the skin by gently exfoliating the topmost layer of the dermis to remove dead skin cells, even out the texture and pigmentation, improve the appearance of wrinkles and acne scarring leaving the skin healthier, softer and firmer. It requires no downtime.

Results are gradual and vary according to skin condition and number of treatments. Most people experience softer, smoother skin after their 1st treatment.

Why is Diamond Microdermabrasion better than Crystal Microdermabrasion?

How Often Should I have Diamond Microdermabrasion?

A series of treatments is highly recommended in order to achieve optimal results. After the series is completed maintenance every 8-10 weeks is advised. An home skincare regimen prescribed by Patricia Casey, LME is essential to complement and enhance the results of the Microdermabrasion treatment at Davis Plastic Surgery in Raleigh, NC.

Look And Feel Great This Spring, Despite Allergy Symptoms

During allergy season, many women find themselves reaching for tissues and wondering why they even bothered putting on eye makeup in the morning. It seems exceptionally rough in Raleigh this Spring! Women often report that eye allergy symptoms like red, puffy eyes make them look exhausted or like they have been crying. Itchy eyes can lead to frequent rubbing, which can cause makeup to smudge. As a result, many women say they feel tired and unattractive during allergy season. That's at least three months per year of potential misery! Additionally, many contact lens wearers with eye allergies say that their allergy symptoms make them feel 'uncomfortable' when wearing their contacts and cause disruption to their beauty routines.

Feel Your Best

  • For allergy sufferers who want to wear or remain in contacts, some doctors recommend daily disposable lenses such as 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses. Putting in a clean, fresh lens every day minimizes the potential for accumulation of allergens and irritants that can often build up with repeated use of the same pair of lenses.
  • Some doctors also recommend being cautious with allergy pills that claim to ease allergy symptoms. Quite frequently, allergy medication can dry the eyes. Try taking it at night if you still need to take something so the drying effect is not as dramatic. Talk to your doctor about what medication(s) are best for you.
  • Use transient-preserved or preservative-free artificial tears.
  • Talk to your Eye Care Professional about any questions or concerns you have regarding eye health or the proper wear and care of your contact lenses. He or she can work with you to determine the appropriate lens and replacement frequency for you, as well as other solutions to eye related problems.

Look Your Best

  • Put in your contact lenses before applying any makeup. This will help prevent makeup residue from getting on your lenses, so you'll avoid eye irritation from makeup particles.
  • Try using a cold compress to ease redness, puffiness and dark circles – but better yet, try cold sliced fresh potatoes underneath your eyes -- the enzyme catecholase (or catechol oxidase) helps diminish dark circles.
  • To offset bloodshot eyes, we recommend using bluish eyeliner on your inner rims. Cobalt and emerald eye liner were everywhere at the spring 2013 runway shows, such as Christian Dior and Anna Sui. You can also use light, shimmery champagne-colored shadow -- instead of dark smoky eye makeup -- to draw in light and brighten your eyes.
  • Rely on waterproof formulas for mascara and eyeliner, as allergy-sufferers are often prone to watery, teary eyes, which can cause the "raccoon" effect. In case you are tearing up, an oil-absorbing sheet can be used to blot into lower lashes, and remove hints of oil and waxiness.
  • Pollen is worse in the mornings. If possible, stay indoors until early afternoon. If you do spend an extended period of time outside, make sure to cover your hair or wash it as soon as you get inside.

6 Ways To Make Your Latisse Last Longer

No doubt about it: many women love Latisse for the way it lengthens their eyelashes. Eighty five percent of reviewers on RealSelf.com gave it a thumbs-up, with some serious raves to boot. But Latisse will have you shell out more than your average mascara: about $90 for a two-month supply, if used as directed. That means one drop on one applicator brush for each eye for 60 days. Still, everyone from our staff to patients to beauty bloggers have been finding creative ways to make their precious drops of Latisse -- and their dollars -- last a little longer. Here's what they're finding:

1. Use only one Latisse drop -- in the cap -- each day.

The directions tell you to apply one drop directly to the brush for each eye. To avoid waste, Davis Plastic Surgery's ever-resourceful Veronica has crafted her own method: "I put one drop in the cap, and dip the brush in the cap. This way, I can do both eyelids with one drop and one brush." Veronica is using Latisse to get lush lashes before her wedding -- and said they were "ridiculously long" after three weeks.

2. Use the Latisse brush for two consecutive days.

Another problem with Latisse -- you get 60 applicator brushes to use, and that's it. New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Joseph says he suggests that patients use one brush for two days straight: "It can be rinsed with water in between uses, and left to air dry." This way, you can get a full four months out of your prescription.

Latisse applied using your own brush

3. Use your own brush.

Beauty bloggers Beauty in the Bag -- which seems to absolutely love Latisse -- thinks a "skinny eyeliner brush" is the way to go rather than with the ones that comes with the package.  This is what our staffer Gretta does - and she's been a faithful user since February of 2008!

4. Cut the Latisse brush in half.

Along the same lines, some docs are telling people to give the little brushes that come with Latisse a chop. This way, you'll use less product -- and what you do use will be applied more carefully and efficiently.

5. Apply only as much Latisse as you need.

Even though Allergan says you need one drop per eye per day, the consensus seems to be that a full drop is probably more than enough. Of course, this depends entirely on how long you want your lashes to be, and don't forget that Latisse's effect isn't permanent -- once you stop using Latisse, your lashes will revert to their original length and thickness.

6. Sign up for Brilliant Distinctions to save!

Many doctors are offering Latisse at the suggested retail price -- between $80-$120. But there are definitely some ways to save easily!  Enroll for Allergan's free Brilliant Distinctions program and earn points (which equals money off!) each time you purchase LATISSE® (and even Botox and Juvederm!) from our office.

Laser Hair Removal Trend for Men

Image
Image

Men have come a long way since the days of showing up to work in a button-down that revealed an army of hair fighting its way past the nape of their necks -- haven't they? While most probably won't go the Brazilian route, you might be surprised (or not) to hear that men are taking it off -- their body hair, that is.

Is it weather-related? Is she hinting at it? Or, have you been curious about how you would look with less hair? Whatever the motivation, men have already arrived at this point. Between waxing, shaving, electrolysis, tweezing, trimming, and laser hair removal, men of all ages, sizes, sexual orientations, ethnic backgrounds, and professions are getting rid of excess body hair.

FDA-approved, laser treatment involves a laser beam basically killing the hair follicles. Results depend on your skin pigmentation and the color of your hair (dark hair absorbs the laser energy, making it easier to treat), so you will first need to find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure. The best results occur with men who have fair skin and black hair. Keep in mind that you cannot receive treatment if you are tanned, as a tan messes with your skin's pigmentation and can lead to blistering or permanent discoloration. This is why darker-skinned men might not make good candidates; thus, consult with a doctor or laser technician first.

Laser hair removal offers a long-lasting reduction in quality and quantity of hair and is the most effective method of hair removal to date.  Multiple sessions are necessary and are priced on the area you are interested in.

Please contact our office at 919-785-1220 or info@drgmdavis.com to find out if you (or the man in your life!) could benefit from laser hair removal in Raleigh or surrounding areas.

Radiesse: Welcome Back Your Own Natural Collagen

Healthy young skin contains collagen that gives it volume, flexibility and strength. As part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity that take away the youthful appearance from your face. Aging brings about many unwanted changes including tired and sagging cheeks, but thanks to Rasiesse, you don't have to give in to that "hollow" look.  Collagen is what gives volume, flexibility and strength to healthy, young skin. As a part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity – all of which rob your skin of its youthful, fresh appearance.

Is Radiesse Right for you?

Radiesse candidates are typically between 35 and 60 and Radiesse usually provides up to 80 percent improvement immediately after treatment.  Although Radiesse is a temporary treatment the results can last up to a year or longer!

What Results can I expect to see?

  • Immediate correction of moderate to severe wrinkles
  • Stimulates the body's own natural collagen production
  • Feels soft and looks natural
  • Provides results that last a year or more in many patients
  • Allows an easy and convenient procedure, back to normal activities in no time
