CoolSculpting®, which targets and reduces fat deposits with a patented cooling process, has become one of the most popular noninvasive body contouring treatments today. However, new information suggests that there may be yet another perk to CoolSculpting® besides finally doing something about that muffin top: patients could even enjoy the added benefit of smoother, firmer skin.
CoolSculpting® is an innovative treatment that uses a cooling process called cryolipolysis to freeze and destroy fat cells underneath the skin with the use of a handheld device. After the fat cells are crystallized and rupture, they are naturally eliminated from the body over time. Considered a nonsurgical liposuction alternative, CoolSculpting® requires no incisions, stitches or downtime and can reduce fat in the treatment area by an average of 20 percent.
CoolSculpting® and Your Skin
Recently, a fair amount of buzz has been generated around the benefits CoolSculpting® may have to offer beyond reducing fat deposits. Many doctors have reported that some patients have experienced a visible improvement in skin firmness following CoolSculpting® treatments. The skin tightening produced as a result of cryolipolysis doesn't appear to be specific to the treatment area but may take several months to fully develop.
For now, CoolSculpting® is not approved by the FDA beyond the purpose of fat reduction because it's not clear how predictable the skin tightening results are or how the results may be influenced by other factors such as patient age, skin condition or number of treatments needed. Although further clinical testing and documentation will be necessary to validate the consistency and reliability of the skin tightening results, it’s exciting to think that there’s yet one more “cool” thing to love about CoolSculpting®.
