Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Your nose is a defining characteristic and focal point of your face, and making even slight adjustments in its shape and proportions can enhance your entire appearance. During rhinoplasty, often called nose surgery, Dr. Jeremy Pyle can alter the size, shape, or profile of your nose to bring your facial features into better harmony. Rhinoplasty may also be performed to bring relief to patients who have had nose injuries or suffer from breathing problems or internal irregularities in their nasal structure.

The Best Candidates

Before having rhinoplasty, patients should wait until their facial development has reached maturity, which is usually around age 16 to 18. The best candidates have realistic expectations about what rhinoplasty can and can’t do, and understand that the ultimate goal with nose surgery is improvement rather than perfection.

During your consultation, Dr. Pyle will assess your nasal structure, skin quality, and the proportions of your other facial features. In order to help you meet your goals, he may also recommend additional procedures, such as facial liposuction, to further balance your facial contours.

What To Expect

During rhinoplasty, there are a number of different approaches Dr. Pyle may take to help you meet your cosmetic goals. For example, in some patients the nasal bridge may need to be decreased, while an increase in the width of the nasal bridge may be better for others. Changes can be made to the width of the entire nose or just the nostrils, the nasal tip may be reshaped or repositioned, and the angle between nose and upper lip may be adjusted as well. In addition to restructuring existing bone and cartilage, Dr. Pyle may incorporate dermal fillers to add volume if needed.

Typically Dr. Pyle will work through small incisions inside the nose, although an external incision where the nose meets the lip may be required in some cases. After the nose has been contoured and reshaped, Dr. Pyle will close the incisions with sutures, and your nose will be packed with absorbent gauze to control bleeding and maintain stability.

After Your Procedure

Most patients will need a nose splint following rhinoplasty, and you may notice that your nose feels stuffy or full. The splint and absorbent gauze are typically removed about a week after surgery, and the majority of swelling should dissipate in the first few weeks. However, this timeframe may vary for you. Bruising around the eyes is common, but usually fades within the first day or two after surgery and should be unnoticeable a few weeks later.

To allow your nose to heal properly, Dr. Pyle will ask you to limit sun exposure and physical activity. You should also avoid forcefully blowing your nose for several weeks, and you shouldn’t wear sunglasses or eyeglasses that could put undue pressure on your nasal bridge.

The New You

The healing process following rhinoplasty can be lengthy. Although you should see an immediate difference in your appearance, your final results will continue becoming more visible over the months following your surgery. Rhinoplasty can dramatically change the way your facial features appear in relation to each other, helping you feel more confident about your new look.
